Bubble size is how far the currency has moved since 2020, measured by the BIS nominal effective exchange rate against a trade-weighted basket of 64 other currencies. A solid bubble is stronger than its 2020 average; a hollow ring is weaker. The ten euro countries share one currency, so they all use the euro-area index and have the same bubble.

Change over each year
Each frame is one calendar year: yields and currency compare December with the previous December, and debt compares the year with the one before. Press play to step through from 2000, or drag the slider. Bubble size is how far the currency moved against its trade-weighted basket that year; a solid bubble means it strengthened and a hollow ring means it weakened. The axes stay fixed so you can follow each country; a few crisis years fall off the scale and are pinned to the edge with an arrow.
